The Academy Triangle
Chapter 1: Always there
He swallowed his drink roughly. It slid down his throat so harshly he thought he swallowed a rock. He knew he shouldn't be drinking. He knew he had work in the morning. He just needed a distraction. As he slammed the glass on the wood, he muttered to himself.
"...I'll never be good enough..."
A quick voice came from beside him
"I know how you feel, man."
On that note, he slid the billiards cue and hit the white ball up in the air. It bounced violently and rolled itself into a side-pocket.
He looked over at where the voice originated from. His two friends hunched over at the bar.
"You may feel like you won't be good enough, but no need to go through all that again."
The boy spoke to him as he scratched his red semi-mohawk mass of hair. The other, brown-haired one, simply shrugged and hunched back at the table, sorrow in his eyes.
'How did it ever come to this?' he thought. 'Why do we always have to fight?!' Suddenly, all three lifted their heads towards the jukebox. They recognized the song.
"Here I stand (here I stand..)
Look around around around around around
(Around around around around around...)
But you won't see me (you won't see me..)
Now I'm here (now I'm here..)
Now I'm there (now I'm there..)"
The three smiled at their favorite song. The two at the bar gave a small wink to their friend, who dropped the pool cue and started singing along
"I'm just a-just a new man!" he sang proudly, "Yes you made me live again!!!"
All of them got up and started drunkenly singing. After the song, they all were laughing and chatting in the booth. Until Redhead brought up a chilling conversation.
"Do you think we'll really stay like this?" asked the redheaded man. "Like...will we still be pals like this? What do you think, Edd?"
Edd sighed and looked at his old friends
"I don't know, gentlemen. But, hey we managed to stay friends through our days at the Academy, right?"
The three laughed while the brown-haired boy continued,
"Well, we will stay with them? I mean, that's the better question."
The redhead sighed and stared into his mug.
"Yeah, I don't know about now...I know you and the wife-ski just had a fight." he hesitantly said.
"It's always the same thing, too." added the brunette man, "It's always whether we'll stay in our career..."
Edd looked down at the table in sadness
"Or if our career ever takes off..."
The red-head looked down-and-left, sad, but he didn't want anyone to notice.
"And for me..." the man sighed and looked through his glass of red wine at the window.
"Well, you know, guys."
The other two grunted affirmitavely. After another round of drinks, they stumbled out into the parking lot. Edd looked up at the stars. 'Why didn't I think about her first?' he asked himself. 'Why do I always think that items and luxuries will make her happy?...Instead of confronting our problems, I just buy her more and more things and work myself to death to avoid the inevitable...It's been like that since I was a kid...'
"Oh, dear, I'm going to need a ride home." said Edd, coming to his senses and dropping his happy mood.
"No worries," said the redhead, "I'll give you a lift!"
The two of them got into his Hybrid. Before starting the engine, they took a look back at their third friend.
"Do you need a ride, too?" asked Edd, as rain started falling.
"Nah, it's cool," said his lazy companion. "Just...just give 'er the truth, Edd."
Edd smiled as he rolled up the window.
"Will do, man....Will do."
They sped off as they saw their friend run in the rain.
As they drove through the streets, Eddward watched his friend's driving. He expected trouble, considering that his headlights that don't give out as much shine as they should, but the streets were illuminated by the city neon. Soon, they reached their destination. Apartments that were the epitome of this town. Grit and grace, children and childishness. He could go on, but he noticed the light on three floors up. He quickly exited the car.
"Thank you so much for the ride here."
"No biggie. See you around, dude."
"See you later, Kevin."
Edd ran through the double-doors. He heedlessly ran straight for the staircases, not even bothering to check in. He panted and sweated as he reached the room and bursted through the door. He ran straight at her, clad in her dressing gown.
"Edd! What are you--?"
She was cut off as he softly embraced her in a blissful hug. He frantically spoke, crying into the soft polyester resting atop her equally soft skin.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I'm sorry we keep having this fight and I'm sorry I'm not everything I could be, but I love you! I love you, I love you, I love you!! I'll always be there, you know I'm always there!!"
She was hesitant at first, but relaxed and pulled him away, and started to well up into tears as well.
"I-I know, Edd. I know."
Soon Edd practically lifted her off the ground. She yelped as he continued with his pledge.
"I promise!" he yelled, "Tomorrow I'll get off work early, we'll talk about EVERYTHING that's been happening! I won't argue! I won't slip off to the bar! Just...talk to me."
His gorgeous wife pushed away daintily.
They both smiled and looked into each other's watering eyes. They kissed each other briefly, before he looked at the clock.
"Come on, it's late." he said, "We both have work in the morning, let's get to bed."
"All right," she said, rolling her eyes. Her smiling, warm spirit never failed to cheer him up. They walked to the bedroom and closed the door.
He looked out the large window at the sunrise. He swung his ID necklace around and around as it seemed to project to everyone, 'Mr. Eddward M. Ley' with, in addition to the title as Biochemistry Teacher and head recommendation for substitute positions, the dossier in his hand read, "Head SSS." He looked at it and almost cried. He'd wanted the promotion to Head Student Support Specialist for years. He would now get the pay of a nurse, a lunch worker, and, in some cases, the pay of the superintendent! If it weren't for his suit, he would have skipped to his room. He entered the small room at just about the time the bell rang.
"Good morning, class." he said with a smirk. He enjoyed running the study hall in the morning, but it was the last day of school! What would they do? Of course, the students were all there just blathering on about gossip and were going to stay like that for another two-to-three hours. Some of them, however, would stay for many more, using the room as their place to write submissions for the annual writing contest. He looked at the picture of his anniversary. He sighed and his eyes lit up.
"Sir?"
One of the girls was at his desk, clutching her notebook.
"Yes, Madalie?"
Madalie was his favorite student in his afternoon studies concerning the use of foreign languages in English literacy.
"This might be weird, but..." she nervously trailed off, "I need to write this story for a contest, and I..I, well--"
"Can't get any inspiration?"
"Well, no." she confessed, blushing.
"Hmmm...." he sighed and thought to himself.
"Sit down over there. I'll think of something."
As she sat, he rang a bell at his desk.
"Excuse me, students?" he smiled and thought his idea silly. "Would any of you like to hear a story?"
"A story?!" scoffed one of the kids in the back, "What, do you think we're five?!"
"Well," he smirked, "is there anything five-year-old about love and loss, friends and family, beer bongs n' thongs, sex, drugs, and rock n' roll? Yes?"
The class was awestruck with their jaws dropped.
"Yeah, it might not rack up to Goodnight Moon, but I like the story...Do I have your attention?"
The students slinked forward to here him.
"Um, sir?"
"Yes, Madalie?"
"Is this a true story?"
"Oh, it's more than a true story," he laughed, "It's the story of my time here at the Academy. Do you want to hear?"
She nodded her head slightly.
"Very well." he said, as he clapped his hands once, "It all started about five years ago...."
